Resume Writing - How to write a great resume!

Writing a good resume will ultimately get you the job interview you seek and might even get you hired immediately. Therefore, your resume must be absolutely perfect before you begin submitting to employers and if you follow the rules involved in writing a good resume, you are bound to get the job you want!

Did you know that you have approximately 20 seconds to impress a potential employer with your resume? Potential employers scan through hundreds of resumes and if your resume doesn't grab their attention within the first 20 seconds that employers encounter it, they will move on to the next resume. Therefore, due to the limited amount of time you are supplied to impress potential employers, you will want to make your resume as attractive and as appealing as possible.

First, when writing a good resume you need to stick to the basic facts. An employer does not care that you love to knit in your spare time, nor does an employer care whether or not you jog or hike in your spare time! Thus, in writing a good resume you must eliminate miscellaneous facts about yourself and stick to supplying facts that are pertinent to the employer like your education and your work experience.

To write a good resume it is important that you don't over personalize your resume. The only personal information required on a resume should pertain to your contact information, your skills, your education and your employment. You do not need to put your date of birth, the city of your birth, or your marital status on a resume. Employers do not take such issues into consideration when they hire someone and such additional information only takes up space that can otherwise be put to better use.

In terms of supplying information on a resume, it is never appropriate to lie when you are applying for a job and you should make sure that your resume supplies honest and accurate information. If you lie on a resume and are caught lying later on down the road, you can quite possibly loss your job for lying. Thus, when you are writing a resume, be as honest and as clear as you can about your education and experience.

A frequent mistake made resume writers is when a prospective employee lists far too many employment references. It is not necessary to list the babysitting job you had when you were fourteen or your prior experience at day camp as a camp counselor! Instead, stick to the last decade when you are listing your prior employers as potential employers are more concerned about recent experience then they are about a job you might have had more than fifteen years ago.

In terms of listing your previous employment, another common mistake made among many job seekers is the inadvertent omission of crucial information. For instance, when you list your former employers you must include any and all of the contact information you have for such employers. If you no longer have updated contact information for your prior employers you must try to obtain it; potential employers may want to call your prior employers to confirm your experience and without contact information they will not be able to do so.

Writing a good resume involves accuracy. Thus, you must check over your resume repeatedly for errors, misspellings and typos. In fact, it might be a good idea if you have someone else look at your resume before you begin submitting it. Another individual will be able to look at your resume and give you a non-biased analysis of your formatting and writing.
