The Interview

If you have managed to get an interview after submitting your resume, you are one step closer to getting that job you are working so hard at getting. Nevertheless, an interview is a crucial step in the hiring process and you will only get one opportunity to impress your potential employer. Thus, you will want to make sure you do everything within your power to make the interview go as smoothly as possible.

Before you even think about what you are going to wear to your interview, be sure you prepare yourself psychologically. Imagine what the interview might be like in your mind and run through a number of scenarios. In doing so, you can mentally prepare for the meeting and lessen the likelihood that you will not be able to answer the employer's questions concisely and accurately.

Before you meet your potential employer, be sure that you dress well for the interview. Professional attire and good grooming says a lot to employers during the interviews they have with prospective employees. Good clothes and good grooming suggest to the employer that you care about yourself and that you are apt to behave in a professional fashion. Thus, when going on interviews, it is important that you never wear everyday wear like sweat pants or blue jeans. Rather, men should wear suits, ties, and women should wear dresses, skirts, or dress suits when they attend interviews.

When you greet your potential employer, be sure to give them a firm handshake and a smile. Introduce yourself and let the employer that you are confident about your abilities to fulfill the needs of the position in question. Also, when shaking hands, make sure your hand is not sweaty or clammy; employers may read it as a sign of nervousness or a lack of confidence.

During the interview, keep your answers to any questions posed brief and simple. Don't overexpose yourself by rambling on about yesterday's laundry. Further, when you are answering questions stick to the point and do not stray off the initial topic. Employers again, may read your rambling as an indication of poor confidence or they may grow annoyed because you don't get to the point of the interview quickly enough.

When you speak to the interviewer, it is imperative that you make eye contact. In fact, during interviews, individuals should maintain eye contact as much as possible. Again, eye contact signifies that you are intently listening to the individual that is speaking, that you have a genuine interest in what they have to say and that you are confident in what it is you have to say in return. Conversely, do not turn your eye contact into an uncomfortable staring contest during an interview, but do maintain enough eye contact to let the person know that you are fully present and aware of your surroundings.

Similar to eye contact, it is important to pay attention to your body language during an interview. Your body language silently speaks for you. For example, if you sit in a chair in front of a potential employer with your arms crossed tightly in front of you or if you continuously twirl your hair between your fingers and occasionally bite your fingernails, you will appear closed off from the world and extremely nervous! Conversely, if you sit comfortably, with a nice posture and a relaxed position, you will convey to the employer your confidence in your abilities.

In short, it is imperative that you pay attention to how you look and act when you go on interviews. A professional appearance and an equally professional demeanor say a lot about the type of individual that you are. In the end, the confidence that you have in yourself will get you the job you deserve!
